CPI(M) district meet begins at Payyannur on January 13

The three-day district conference of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) will be opened by party State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan at Payyannur on January 13 and Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate the valedictory function on January 15.
Briefing about the arrangements and programmes planned in connection with the district conference, CPI(M) district secretary P. Jayarajan said at a press conference here on Tuesday that 375 delegates representing 43,433 party members in the district as well as 42 party district committee members would attend the delegates’ session of the conference. The party’s political, organisational activities and agitations it spearheaded in the district over the past 48 months since the last district conference of the party here in January 2008 would be evaluated at the conference, he said adding that the conference would discuss the achievements and setbacks of the party in the district during the past four years.
Mr. Jayarajan disclosed that the membership in the class and mass organisations of the party had recorded an increase by three lakh members during the last four years. Though the CPI(M) had faced setback in the Lok Sabha election held in 2009, it could secure a vote share of 51.76 per cent in local body elections and 51.10 per cent in the Assembly election in the district. Out of the 81 grama panchayats in the district 53 have party councilors as presidents. Of the six municipalities, five are controlled by the party and 10 out of 11 block panchayats have CPI(M) members as presidents. Though the party still enjoyed mass support in the district, it did not have much influence in some centres and some sections of people, he acknowledged adding that the conference would chalk out an action plan for expanding the party’s mass influence in the district.
The three-day conference being held at the Ayodhya Auditorium at Payyannur would also initiate a mass political education programme to inculcate political consciousness among the people against attempts by caste and communal organisations to spread their malicious propaganda.
Such reactionary forces were also trying to use even social media for the propagation of their ideas, he added. He also said that the party had lost 14 workers in attacks by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and National Development Front (now Popular Front of India) activists during the past four years. The CPI(M) was not only in the forefront of the battle against the extremist and terrorist organisations but was also spearheading strong agitation against the anti-people policies of the Congress-led governments in the State and the Centre.
As the district conference was the last in the series of district conference in the State ahead of the 20 Party Congress, almost all the State-level party leaders including Polit Bureau member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan as well as P.K. Sreemathy and E.P. Jayarajan would attend the meet, Mr. Jayarajan said.
